Summary: Photographs and a small amount of printed materials document the Sykes family and activities in Arizona, Baja California, and Mexico mostly from 1896 to 1960. There are many portraits of Sykes family members including children with toys, their swimming pool, automobiles, homes on 4th Street, 6th Street, Rudasill Road and Silverbell Road. There are images of the construction of Arizona Desert School, U of A buildings and domes at the Steward Observatory and the Desert Sanitorium, and Carnegie Desert Laboratory buildings. A complete series of construction images is present for the 6th Street Underpass. There are images at Summerhaven on Mount Lemmon, and Mount Wrightson. Images of flooding on the Santa Cruz River include on of two men, Glenton Sykes and Henry Pearson, in a rowboat in 1951. Also present are aerial views of Tucson flooding in 1961. There are images of Charles K. Hamilton's 1910 airplane and aviation exhibit at Elysian Grove and a 1924 "around the world" aviation event. Photos of Casa Grande High School students and buildings, ca. 1921, when Anna Sykes was teacher are also present. There are a few early images including the Sykes' brothers repair and bicycle shop and ranch in Flagstaff, the Lowell Observatory, and Colorado River Delta trips including ferries and steamboats near Yuma ca. 1900-1910, and locating the Lt. Ives "Explorer" boat. There are views of the old plank road near Yuma. A few images are present of the Grand Canyon, Casa Grande ruins, Keam's Canyon store, and a trip along Camino del Diablo that includes Border Patrol officers. Expeditions to Mexico include a trip to view a 1923 eclipse, and research trips to Pinacate with the Desert Lab. Other trips include such people as A.E. Douglass, Don Bufkin, Tad Nichols, and Bob Lenon.

Biographical note: Godfrey Sykes, an engineer, came to Arizona in 1886 and settled on a ranch near Flagstaff. Along with his brother Stanley Sykes, he opened a repair workshop in Flagstaff. Godfrey came to Tucson to work for the Carnegie Desert Laboratory in 1896 and accompanied many research expeditions with the Lab. His sons, Glenton and Gilbert often accompanied him in his work.
